3 tips for helping your kids through divorce

Divorce is almost always stressful, sad and confusing for everyone involved, including children. As you and your spouse know that divorce is imminent, now is the time to make sure your kids are coping healthily. It is your job as a parent to help your kids figure out how to handle the divorce.

With all the anger and concerns involved, it can be easy to lose sight of giving your children the emotional care they need. That is why we have put together an easy guide to helping your kids through this hard time and minimizing the emotional damage.

1. Stop putting down the other parent

You might be feeling a lot of bitterness towards the other parent, but restrain yourself from making negative comments around the kids. No matter how angry you are, do not let your children witness it firsthand. Playing the blame game and bad-mouthing the other parent can make children feel stuck in the middle.

2. Be cooperative

Even more than just stopping yourself from making negative comments, you should try your best to work with the other parent if you want to have the best results. According to HelpGuide, working together with the other parent to reduce conflict is one of the most effective ways to help your children through divorce

3. Validate your children

Your kids will show a range of emotion before, during and after your divorce. You will witness a lot of anger and sadness. Let your children know that you care. Provide reassurance and healthy communication. If your children feel like they are able to express their emotions around you, they will be better able to make it through the divorce.

Trying to manage all aspects of your impending divorce can seem impossible, but you can do it. Remember that it is important for you to maintain a positive relationship with your kids, no matter how bitter and angry you might be.
