What do you need to gather together after someone dies?

Losing a loved one is never easy. Making it more difficult is the uncertainty around what to do after you get the news. In Michigan, after someone dies it is up to the estate administrator or executor to handle the final disposition of property and follow last wishes.

If that person is not you, it is important you still follow the below steps to get the process rolling sooner rather than later.

Funeral plans and funds

If the deceased left paperwork directing funeral plans, you need to find it and give it to the executor. Some people also pre-pay for their funeral, so it is important that you know the details. Not only do you want to carry through with your loved one's wishes, you do not want to pay for something that he or she has already taken care of.

Bank account information

Since the will divvies up the deceased's assets and property, you need to gather all the most current information so the executor has it. One of the first items you want to locate is the current banking information. You want to look for things such as accounts and safety deposit boxes. If you find keys for a box but no other locating information, you may need to get your loved one's attorney involved to try and find where it is.

Debtor names and account information

The executor will also need to obtain documentation regarding the deceased's debts. Some debts may wind up dismissed, but the estate will need to pay others prior to disbursement of assets to beneficiaries. If the deceased owned a vehicle, gather the paperwork on any outstanding loan. Include loan and mortgage paperwork in this step.

Having a plan in place after a loved one's death is critical to making the estate disbursement go smoothly. It also ensures the fulfillment of the deceased's wishes.
